Beta release

In this beta release, we finished most of the graphs needed for the final version of the project.
One thing to keep in mind that due to the nature of our data, sales data for games released after 2013 is far from accurate. Most of those games have just entered the market.

This graph shows the total sales for games released in a certain year by genre. Not surprisingly, action and sport are the two dominant genres.

This graph shows the percentage of total sales for game released in a certain year by their ESRB rating, and NoR represents a missing rating information.
Old game released prior year 2000 doesn't have a rating collected, thus we only consider relatively new games.

This graph shows information about the Top 100 best selling games. Specifically, the critics scores are on the y-axis, the copies sold is represented as the diameter of each bubble, and the color shows the genre of the game.
As the dataset only contains games with at least 10,000 copies sold, this graph also reflects the bias of the data collected. When old games were released, the whole video game market was less mature, thus harder for a game to sell 10,000 copies than it is now. Thus, the data collected will have less old games.

This graph reflects the number of games released in each year by platform series. We define platform series as follows:

  • Nintendo: NES, SNES, N64, GC, Wii, WiiU, GB, GBA, DS, 3DS
  • Sony: PS, PS2, PS3, PS4, PSP, PSV
  • Microsoft: Xbox, Xbox360, XboxOne
  • Other: GEN, SCD, DC, GG, 2600, 3DO, NG, PCFX, TG16, SAT, WS, PC

The next four graphs combines a multigraph, as they convey a similar concept. We will convert them into a combined graph in the final release.
